Our mission:  Portside Java procures the finest Arabica coffee beans from around the world and roasts them in small batches to bring out best aromas and flavors for each varietal.  We deliver our coffees freshly roasted, at the peak of their flavor profiles, allowing the brewer to maximize their potential in the cup.

Our story:  Capt. Scott Howard holds a United States Coast Guard Masters License.  He has raced sailboats across the sea, driven cruise ships throughout the Mid-Atlantic and New England coastal waters, and most recently, captained working boats assisting with the cleanup of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  These days, he has retired portside, but even so, Capt. Howard can often be found driving the General Jackson and Music City Queen riverboats along the Cumberland River in Nashville, TN.

Looking back, coffee figures heavily into some of Capt. Howard's best memories from his time at sea.  Pulling into some distant port, far from home, exhausted after working the dreaded "dogwatch," he often thought that some of the simplest things are life's greatest pleasures.  Good friends, good conversation, good coffee.

After returning home, Capt. Howard and his beautiful wife, Kim--a lifetime school teacher--realized they could bring at least some of this amazing experience back to you.  They decided to open a specialty coffee roasterie, providing the best coffees he'd been fortunate enough to enjoy during his travels.  And so the idea for Portside Java was born: KEEP DREAMS ALIVE.

Today, Portside Java is a family business located in Hendersonville, Tennessee.  We roast to order to assure you of always receiving the freshest coffee possible.  We use only high-quality, Arabica coffee beans, roasted in small batches, and we ship or deliver to coffee shops, restaurants, retailers, youth organization fundraisers, and you.  We maintain an on-line store, and ship UPS, FedEx or USPS anywhere in the country.

We enjoy sharing our knowledge and experience, so please feel free to toss us a line at (615) 604-0021.  With “the heart of a teacher,” one of our great joys is working with youth group fundraisers.  In fact, we believe that youth fundraising is an important avenue to HELP KEEP DREAMS ALIVE, which is one of Portside Java's core values.  We are committed to helping children make a way where they saw no way before. We believe that the lessons learned and confidence gained from fundraising will benefit them for a lifetime.  Please contact us if you would like our assistance fundraising for your youth group.

A note from Kim:

“Portside Java” is a dream come true for the Howard family.  Our first purchase as a married couple was a purple sailboat called a WHIP.  This boat allowed us to begin dreaming of all the places we wanted to go in our lives.  Some of those dreams were on the water and some were just living.  Children came along, and the purple boat gave way to bikes with baby seats and eventually back to a boat with sides tall enough that little ones couldn't fall overboard.  From tall sides, we graduated to boats with beds, and boats that allowed active kids to jump into the water and swim, and boats that went really fast, but always there was a boat.  Sailing has always been a part of our family and has taken us places people only dream of traveling.  We have been blessed to sail for fun, sail for business, sail to race, and sail just to sail.  Time and family have brought us back portside, and our dream now is to help facilitate the dreaming of others.  So slow down, grab a mug, and travel the world as you dream of the places you want to go.  The first step to accomplishment is the dream!

As we look back together we have a lifetime of memories.  As we look forward we have dreams. The Lord has blessed us mightily and we want to thank him for it by helping others.  With every bag of coffee we sell we will make a donation to an organization that reaches out to people in need.  Maybe in some small way our dream can help them keep their dreams alive too!

Sincerely,

Kim, the Captain’s wife
